Application for engraving
Any deceased person who directly participated in a commercial fishery in Alaska (or any Alaskan who participated in a commercial fishery elsewhere) as a fisherman or -woman, is eligible to have their name engraved on the Wall. Final eligibility is determined by the Memorial Board.
In respect for the legal heirs of the deceased, and to avoid possible upset feelings at a time that is already difficult for families, those completing applications ideally should either be, or have the demonstrable blessing of, the deceased's next-of-kin. We may ask for an email confirmation to this effect.
Applications for engraving should be accompanied by a $600 donation to the Memorial, which goes toward covering the actual engraving expenses (labor, equipment shipping, materials, and airfare). Donations should be mailed in with your application [see first page of application].
For technical reasons beyond our control, engravings typically occur in July, after the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony has occurred in May. This year's new names will be dedicated in May (at the first ceremony following their approval) and will appear on the Wall at the ceremony in a temporary format. They will be engraved soon after, and then noted a second time at next year's ceremony, following their actual engraving in stone.
Please note that names are not engraved every year. If, by mid-May, too few names have been approved for engraving to cover the cost of adding them, new names will be etched-in during the next round of engraving the following summer.
Please note that the format and content of engravings is outlined in the application. In general, we are limited to combinations of individuals' names; Tlingit, Haida, or other First Nations names; nicknames; vessel names, and dates of birth and death; and there is a 28 character limit per line. We will work with you to develop as needed and confirm the content of your engraving via email.
Names should be submitted by 'late April' to be included in this year's reading and on the program materials for the ceremony. Late applications received and approved by a day or two before the ceremony may not appear in this year's program materials due to production lead times, but those names can still be read at the ceremony. Applications received and approved by 'mid-May' (after the ceremony), or sometimes as late as early June, can still be engraved this year and welcomed at the ceremony next year (all depends on when the engraver actually comes up). In short: apply as soon as possible and we will do the best we can. Drop us a line with any questions.
Please read and follow the application instructions carefully.
